ADDITION AND PROPORTION
We were in charge of the complete renovation of the Perpetuo Socorro’s Clinic, an eclectic building that occupies the corner defined by the Bisbe Messeguer Street and Alcalde Sol Street, in the Catalan city of Lerida. Our aim was to protect the main values, recovering the quality and dignity of the old building, which have suffered a lot of refurbishments without a unique architectural criterion, and to provide a new functionality open to new deals in medicine and hospital management.
From an architectural point of view, the project enlarges the existing building in two directions: horizontally, by adding a new building next to the old one, and vertically, by overlapping two new floors, with a shell of metallic panels, over the four old ones. In order to recover its original proportions and free outer space of the internal courtyard, a former wing was demolished, and a new volume was built with a new Surgery Block, storage areas and facilities, making a central core for the Clinic.
The construction was carried out in different phases, as the Hospital never stopped functioning. That required an extraordinary coordination between the hospital staff, construction contractors and architects.
