The new school will be an important building in the community, integrated into the school complex, but at the same time a public centre that will bring a lot of life to Schruns. Conscious of its size, the building is clearly positioned, with a spacious square in front that leaves enough space for the protected Old Court.
The urban development plan for the new primary school in Schruns provides for the creation of two large, beautifully designed squares: one in front of the Old Court and another in front of the secondary school. The existing urban structure of Schruns, which is characterised by a sequence of squares, will thus be continued. Coming from the church square, the street narrows and then opens up into another square. Pedestrians can walk along the primary school and reach the next square. This sequence of squares is reinforced by a uniform design with paving stones and large, striking trees.
The light-flooded ground floor welcomes pupils and visitors. Here you will find the spacious foyer plus with lounge areas and the library as well as the gym. The transparent façade design allows fascinating views and insights into the new green space and village life. The zigzag façade in the east is reminiscent of a child’s pattern of jumping and creates niches in the interior and exterior space that invite people to stay a while.
The spacious foyer-plus is directly merged with the library. The dining area with warm-up kitchen is directly connected to it. The flowing transitions turn this area into the foyer plus and is a kind of large stage that can be used again and again according to the needs of the school. The bookshelves form a kind of snail shape and create a labyrinthine space for the children, who can embark on a journey of discovery here. All bookshelves are mobile and can be pushed together compactly. This means that the auditorium can be transformed into a large event space depending on how it is used. The bookshelves can also be transformed into display boards for exhibitions. The flexible use of these elements creates a diverse, creative meeting place for everyone.
